Where did Paju-Tiera get her name?
The working names of the litter were Easter-themed and this puppy's working name was Paju, which was also part of the nickname, so the puppy became Paju-Tiera. Paju means willow.
Willow is traditionally associated with the moon, water, death and birth, and fertility. It is a strong emotional cleanser that is believed to remove emotional blockages and help with grief. Brooms and magic wands made of willow symbolize change. Willow is a soft and feminine, yet powerful and chaste tree, which is favored by women especially during the full moon. Willow is also a bridge to the other side, it is known as The tree of enchantment. Untying a knot visible on a willow branch brings bad luck and can anger the owners who tied it.
In the Kalevala, Iku-Tiera Nieranpoika is Lemminkäinen's friend, comrade in arms and a skilled spear user. Although Tiera is a male person in the Kalevala, the name is also used by women in Finland.
